If you've been searching for couples therapy in Sebastopol, CA or anywhere in California and wondering whether a couples intensive might be a better fit — this guide is for you.

So you and your partner have decided that after many months (maybe years) of circling around the same argument, that you want to reach out for support. Maybe the two of you are actually doing well, but you’re looking for a way to iron out those disagreements in a more productive way. In any case - you finally agree - we need some expert guidance to get us through to the next phase of our relationship. You’re just not sure if weekly therapy or a 2 day intensive would be the best fit.
Most couples don't know a couples intensive is even an option until they're already deep into weekly therapy — or burned out from it. This post is here to better inform you of what the options are, and which one is right for you.
What Is Weekly Couples Therapy?
Weekly therapy in my practice is usually 75 minutes, at the same time every week. You can opt for in-person sessions in my office in Sebastopol, CA, or you can choose telehealth, where I am able to meet with anyone living in California. We cover the origin story of your relationship, I gather information on each of your family of origin to get an even better idea of what messages were instilled in you as far as how relationships work, and we pinpoint the issues that are bringing you in. This is a slow building process, allowing the clients to go home between sessions and bring in current ways their issues show up which we can then work on in the next session. The skills that are learned each week are slowly integrated. I like to tell clients to view the changes they make as a sort of experiment - you try something new, see how it works out, then come back to the drawing board.
This works best for:
Partners who can commit to a weekly appointment and feel stabilized by weekly check ins with the therapist
Couples who may be getting engaged or have newer issues they want to work out
Couples who want the week after a session to integrate what’s been said, shared, and learned before the next session
What Is a Couples Intensive? (And How Is It Different Than Weekly Couples Therapy?)
A Couples Intensive starts with preparation. There is a comprehensive intake for each partner to fill out and I give resources to the couple like books and podcasts to check out before the intensive. The actual intensive is two, 7 hour days (6 hours of therapy with one hour break for lunch) totalling 12 hours of therapy in 2 days (usually a Saturday and Sunday). The couples intensives have two, 50 minute follow up sessions - one at 3 weeks after the intensive, and another at about 8 weeks after the intensive.
In couples intensives, the focus on the goals the couple has is continuously checked on throughout the two days. The shorter, deeper dive into the work requires there to be a clear focus and goal for the couple and the therapist in order to have the outcome the couple is hoping for. The first day is all about understanding; how did we get to where we are now? Much like weekly therapy, I will go into family of origin, the couples’ origin story, and learn about how the issues show up today. On the second day, we integrate all of the understanding from the first day. We build skills, we practice them in the session, we process and gain new understanding. The couple walks away having reached their intended goals for the intensive; a clear understanding of what hasn’t been working and what needs to change in order for their relationship to change. The couple gains practical, tangible tools to put into practice. I offer couples intensives in-person in Sebastopol and San Rafael, California.
This works best for:
Couples with repeat arguments and have become disconnected
Busy couples who can’t find time to do a weekly session consistently
Partners experiencing difficulties from life transitions and want to get aligned before it gets harder
Couples healing from infidelity or betrayal wanting to rebuild trust

It’s Not Either/Or
Some couples do both — an intensive to create momentum and clarity, followed by weekly sessions to integrate the work over time. Others do an intensive as a standalone experience and find that's exactly enough. There's no single right answer, and part of what the free consultation is for is figuring out which path makes the most sense for you specifically.
5 Signs a Couples Intensive Might Be Right for You
You've been stuck in the same cycle for a long time. [It’s been years of this same cycle and it’s starting to feel like the relationship is on the line - we can’t go on like this. Weekly sessions haven’t helped and you need a space to air it all out and give it one last ditch effort.]
Your schedule makes weekly sessions nearly impossible. [You are committed to making things work with your partner - but with our careers, travel, the kids… it’s nearly impossible to make a standing weekly appointment happen. We want to invest in a weekend just for us, in a way that really matters and make lasting changes we can bring home to our daily lives.]
You're facing a major transition and want to get ahead of it. [A move, a new baby, a career change, or a recently blended family… We need some tools and skills to communicate with each other ASAP. We are having difficulties adjusting to this new reality and are looking for a space to hear each other and create new agreements.]
You want faster progress than the weekly format allows. [We’re ready to get into the core of our issues... now. No need for catching up on our week like in weekly sessions - let’s face the problems and get the support we are looking for in one fell swoop.]
You're not in crisis — you just want more. [We’re fine… but we could be better. We love and respect each other, but we want to build a more intimate, empathetic, and healthy relationship. We are the first to break the cycle in our families, and we want to do the best we can.]
4 Signs Weekly Therapy Might Be the Better Starting Point
You're just beginning to explore therapy for the first time. [I am not sure what to expect, and I want a soft landing for my first experience in couples therapy. We can always shift to an intensive later if it feels right.]
You want a slower, more gradual process. [I like to learn and integrate so I fully understand new concepts. I like to take what I learn in smaller increments and implement them in my life weekly so I can build skills that I can maintain.]
One or both partners is in individual therapy and needs time to integrate. [We are discovering more and more about ourselves in individual therapy, and want to come together weekly to gain better understanding together. Weekly format feels like a sustainable way to do this.]
You want ongoing support rather than a single intensive experience. [We thrive when we have accountability in the form of weekly couples therapy. We pay attention to how we relate to each other better when we know a session is coming up, and we find that gives us better integration with new skills that give us lasting change.]
