So - You and your partner have been meaning to "work on things" for months. Maybe years. You finally book a couples therapist, show up to your 50-minute session, spend the first 15 minutes catching up on the week, get into something real — and then the timer goes off. You leave feeling like you just scratched the surface. Again.

That's not a failure of therapy. That's just the reality of the weekly format. And it's exactly why couples intensives exist. This type of therapy condenses weeks or months of work into a few concentrated days, providing couples with a powerful opportunity to reconnect, resolve conflicts, and build stronger communication skills.

I offer couples intensives in-person in San Rafael and Sebastopol, CA and via telehealth across all of California. Here's everything you need to know about what they are, how they work, and whether one might be right for you.

What Is a Couples Intensive?

A couples intensive is a short-term, intensive therapy experience designed to help couples work through specific relationship challenges in a focused setting. Instead of traditional couples therapy, meeting once a week for 50 minutes, couples spend several hours a day over a few consecutive days with a therapist. This format allows for deeper exploration and faster progress.

During the intensive, couples engage in guided conversations, exercises, and therapeutic techniques tailored to their unique needs. The therapist helps identify patterns, improve communication, and develop practical tools to manage conflicts and strengthen the relationship.

Who Can Benefit from a Couples Intensive?

Couples intensives are suitable for a wide range of relationships and situations. Here are some examples of who might find this approach helpful:

  • Couples wanting to deepen their connection

Couples don't need to be in crisis to want to strengthen their bond, improve communication, or prepare for a major transition like marriage or parenthood.

  • Couples facing a crisis or urgent issue

When a relationship is at a breaking point, such as after a major argument, infidelity, or a significant life change, an intensive can provide immediate support and clarity.

  • Couples with busy schedules

Partners who struggle to find time for regular therapy sessions due to work, family, or travel commitments may benefit from the concentrated format.

  • Couples who have tried traditional therapy without success

Some couples find that weekly sessions don’t create enough momentum. An intensive can break through stuck patterns by focusing energy and attention.

  • Couples preparing for separation or divorce

An intensive can help couples clarify their feelings, improve co-parenting plans, or decide on next steps with less conflict.

What Types of Couples Can Attend?

Couples intensives are inclusive and can support diverse relationship types, including:

  • Married couples

Whether newlyweds or long-term partners, married couples often use intensives to address communication issues or rekindle intimacy.

  • Dating or engaged couples

Couples preparing for marriage or committed partnerships can use intensives to build a strong foundation.

  • Same-sex couples

Intensives provide a safe space to explore unique challenges and strengthen connection.

  • Blended families

Couples navigating step-parenting or family blending can benefit from focused support.

  • Couples in long-distance relationships

An intensive can help partners reconnect and develop strategies for managing distance.

What to Expect During a Couples Intensive

Each intensive is unique, but here is my structure:

  • Pre-Intensive Assessment

Before the intensive, couples will complete an intake and have a brief phone call with the therapist to identify goals and concerns.

  • Focused Sessions

The first day (or first session if half-day) is more structured. It's a chance for me to really understand the current issues, and history that may be contributing to it. We will gain understanding of what isn't working and what needs to happen for things to change. The second day is where we have less-structured, but attuned sessions that can include things like repair, psycho-education and skill-building, talking through issues, experiential learning, and practicing communication skills.

  • A Reflection Summary and Roadmap

I will provide you with a summary of all the key discoveries and breakthroughs and offer you a guide on how to continue using the tools we learned at home.

  • Follow-Up Support

I offer 2 follow-up sessions included in the price of the intensive. One at 3 weeks and another at 8 weeks.

Benefits of a Couples Intensive

  • Rapid progress

The concentrated time allows couples to address issues quickly.

  • Increased focus

Without distractions of daily life, couples can fully engage in the process of therapy focused on exactly what it is you want support with.

  • Stronger communication

Intensive work often leads to clearer, more honest conversations.

  • Renewed connection

Couples often leave feeling closer and more understood.

  • Practical tools

Couples gain skills they can use long after the intensive ends.

If you and your partner want to make meaningful changes in your relationship but find traditional therapy too slow or difficult to schedule, a couples intensive could be a great fit. It works best when both partners are willing to engage openly and commit to the process.

Consider these questions:

  • Are you facing a specific challenge that needs urgent attention?

  • Do you want to improve communication and understanding quickly?

  • Is your schedule too busy for weekly sessions?

  • Are you open to deep, honest conversations in a focused setting?
